I was awarded the 2014 Wang Gungyu Medal for best Ph.D. thesis in the natural sciences. My thesis involved multidisciplinary work on the illegal trade of ornamental plants (mostly Orchidaceae) in continental Southeast Asia. It considered market species composition, regional trade networks and value chains, the potential for wildlife farming to help reduce illegal trade, and local rule systems that govern illegal resource use.

The award is supported by a 2005 donation by Professor Wang Gungwu, University Professor at the National University of Singpaore, Chairman of the Board of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, and a prominent historian best known for his work on the Chinese diaspora.
