Seeking new Indonesian university collaborators & students: Fire & haze research

Seeking Indonesian Masters and Ph.D. Candidates, Early-career Academics and Post-doctoral Researchers to jointly-apply for collaborative grants

I am working as part of a small, dynamic team of researchers on the social and policy dimensions of Indonesia's peatland fires and haze: Dr Rachel Carmenta (Center for International Forestry Research) and Dr Aiora Zabala, (Cambridge University). We are now looking for new, enthusiastic colleagues in Indonesia who are interested in joining us for international networking, training and research.

We are looking for early-career lecturers, post-doctoral researchers, Masters and Ph.D. students interested in applying for joint funding to work with us, based at the Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) in the UK. LEC is a top 10 university in the UK, at the top 1% of universities globally, and one of the largest environmental research centres in the world, with a strong interdisciplinary focus.

Early-career academics and post-doctoral researchers

The Newton Fund has funding calls for travel and networking by Indonesian early-career academics (<15 years after receipt of Ph.D.) interested in the UK. There are also opportunities for post-doctoral researchers to work in the UK. Deadline: TBD

The Tanoto Foundation supports mobility for early career faculty from Indoensian universities to spend periods of time in foreign universities. Deadline: Rolling applications

Masters and Ph.D. Candidates

The Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan (LPDP) Programme provides funding for Masters and Doctoral students, and we would like to explore joint research proposals from strong candidates interested in Lancaster University. Deadline: 4 calls per year.

The Indonesia-UK DIKTI Scholarship Programme supports permanent and future Indonesian university lecturers interesting in doctoral studies at participating UK universities, including Lancaster. Deadline: Rolling applications

The Tanoto foundation supports a number of Masters and some Ph.D. students to pursue their research and education programs in Indonesian and foreign universities. Deadline: Rolling applications

Possible areas of research

We are seeking Indonesian collaborators interested in environmental governance/policy and the socio-economic dimensions of environmental management, particularly related to Indonesia's recurrent peatland fires, and the resulting haze, including on:

  • Socio-economic impacts of haze at the farm level

  • Perceptions of different policy solutions to issues such as fire, haze and deforestation

  • Ethnographic research on fire practices and responses to different policy solutions

  • Legal, tenure and institutional dimensions of landuse change and fire

  • Social approaches to GIS
